  • Matt LaCosse: Stepping away

LaCosse is retiring from the NFL, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports. LaCosse went undrafted out of Illinois and spent seven years in the NFL. Between stints with the Giants, Broncos and Patriots he played 34 games, making 40 catches on 60 targets for 403 yards and two touchdowns. LaCosse was a free agent and had finished last season on the Patriots' practice squad.

  • Matt LaCosse: Headed back to practice squad

LaCosse reverted back to the Patriots' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log. LaCosse suited up Sunday against the Browns with Jonnu Smith inactive due to a shoulder injury. He saw nine snaps on offense but was never targeted. If Smith is unable to go Thursday against the Falcons, LaCosse will try to earn another shot to play.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Elevated from practice squad

LaCosse was elevated from the Patriots' practice squad in advance of Sunday's game against the Browns. LaCosse, who last saw regular-season action in 2019, bolsters the team's Week 10 depth at tight end with Jonnu Smith managing a shoulder issue and listed as questionable for Sunday's contest.

  • Matt LaCosse: Sticks with Patriots

LaCosse was signed to New England's practice squad Wednesday, Andrew Callahan of Boston Herald reports. LaCosse was waived at Tuesday's roster deadline but will remain with the Patriots on the practice squad. The 28-year-old opted out of the 2020 campaign after catching 13 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown in 11 games for New England in 2019.

  • Matt LaCosse: Parts ways with Pats

New England released LaCosse on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. LaCosse opted out of the 2020 season, and he will now have to search for a role elsewhere in the league. The Patriots are heading into the 2021 regular season with Devin Asiasi around as a reserve option behind Hunter Henry (shoulder) and Jonnu Smith.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Opts out of season

LaCosse has opted out of the 2020 NFL season, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. LaCosse thus becomes the eighth player on the Patriots to opt out of the 2020 campaign due to COVID-19 concerns. Now that he's unavailable, the members of the team's tight end corps are Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene, Ryan Izzo and Jake Burt.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Added competition via draft

LaCosse's depth chart standing will be challenged by rookie tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene, Adam London of NESN.com reports. Moreover, London suggests that either LaCosse or Ryan Izzo may not stick with the team in the wake of the Patriots doubling-down on Asiasi and Keene in Round 3 of this past week's NFL Draft. In his first season with New England, LaCosse caught just 13 passes for 131 yards with one TD in 11 games, and it's possible he could be the odd man out, considering Izzo's utility as a blocker. Either way, between the added competition for targets and a looming transition at QB, LaCosse is off the fantasy radar as the 2020 season approaches.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Logs 13 catches this past season

LaCosse finished the 2019 regular season with 13 catches (on 19 targets) for 131 yards and a TD in 11 games. With Rob Gronkowski no longer in the mix, LaCosse, Ben Watson and Ryan Izzo handled the Patriots' tight end duties in 2019. Neither of the trio came close to approaching fantasy relevance- and we'd expect some sort of makeover at the position this offseason, with Watson a candidate to retire. Meanwhile, LaCosse -- who was hampered at times this past season by ankle and knee issues -- is under contract with New England through 2020, but Jeff Howe of the Athletic notes that if LaCosse doesn't make the team next season, the Patriots can save $1.4 million against their salary cap. If he does stick around in 2020 and can stay healthy, LaCosse should be able to produce more, but with moving parts at both his position and also at QB, it's too early to assign him an accurate projection.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Hauls in three passes Sunday

LaCosse was on the field for 49 of a possible 65 snaps on offense in Sunday's 34-13 win over the Bengals, en route to hauling in all three of his targets for 22 yards. Meanwhile, fellow tight end Ben Watson was on the field for 34 snaps but wasn't targeted in the contest. At this stage, it looks like LaCosse has overtaken Watson as the Patriots' preferred pass-catching option at his position, but that's not a high-volume role in the team's offense these days.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Hauls in two passes Sunday

LaCosse caught two of his four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Chiefs. LaCosse was on the field for 54 of a possible 67 snaps on offense in the contest, while fellow tight end Ben Watson logged 32 snaps, en route to catching one of his three targets for seven yards. Neither player profiles as a reliable fantasy option down the stretch.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Sees 53 snaps Sunday

LaCosse was on the field for 53 of a possible 87 snaps on offense in Sunday's 28-22 loss to the Texans, en route to catching one of his two targets for 24 yards. Meanwhile, fellow tight end Ben Watson was on the field for 47 snaps, hauling in his only target for 23 yards. Neither of New England's top two tight ends are high-percentage fantasy lineup options in the coming weeks.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Held to one catch

LaCosse caught his only target for five yards during Sunday's 13-9 win over the Cowboys. LaCosse played 34 snaps (49 percent) on offense. No. 1 tight end Ben Watson, on the other hand, took the field for 49 snaps (70 percent). As long as he remains relegated to a depth role in New England's offense, LaCosse won't warrant much fantasy consideration.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Logs 21 snaps Sunday

LaCosse caught two of his targets for three yards in Sunday's 17-10 win over the Eagles. In his return to action from an MCL injury that caused him to miss three games, LaCosse logged 21 snaps in the contest. Meanwhile, fellow tight end Ben Watson was on the field for 59 snaps Sunday, en route to catching three of his four targets for 52 yards. As long as Watson stays healthy, LaCosse's fantasy value will be limited.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: All clear for Week 11

LaCosse is officially listed as active for Sunday's game against the Eagles. LaCosse has missed the last three games with an MCL sprain and, as evidenced by this news, doesn't need more time to recover. Now that the Illinois product is finally healthy enough to make his return to the lineup, he'll resume his role as the No. 2 option at the tight end position behind Ben Watson.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Listed as questionable

LaCosse (knee) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's match against the Eagles. LaCosse has missed the last three games due to an MCL sprain. He appears to have made some progress in his recovery coming off New England's bye, but his status remains up in the air for Sunday's tilt against the Eagles. Even if LaCosse does manage to take the field Week 11, he won't be worth much fantasy consideration as the No. 2 option behind Ben Watson.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Limited participant Wednesday

LaCosse (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday. LaCosse has been on the sideline since Week 6 against the Giants when he suffered an MCL sprain. The tight end worked in a limited fashion last week as well, so he has a chance to play this Sunday against the Eagles. Even if he suits up, his fantasy value is negligible as the Patriots' No. 2 tight end against the Eagles' defense, which has allowed four receptions for 40.4 yards per game to the position.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Downgraded to out

The Patriots have have ruled LaCosse (knee) out for Sunday's game against the Ravens. LaCosse was originally given a questionable designation, but the Patriots did not wait until game day to rule him out. The absence will mark his third consecutive game missed. He was able to return to practice this week as a limited participant, so he appears to be trending in the right direction. Look for Ben Watson to continue being the Patriots' top tight end option in Week 9.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Questionable for Sunday

LaCosse (knee) is considered questionable for Sunday's game at Baltimore, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports. LaCosse returned to practice as a limited participant this week after missing the last two games with the knee sprain. The 27-year-old will have a chance to suit up Sunday and could serve as the Patriots' No. 1 tight end if active.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Practices in limited fashion

LaCosse (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Nora Princiotti of The Boston Globe reports. LaCosse has missed New England's last two contests due to a sprained knee. He didn't practice in any capacity last week, so his limited session Wednesday is a notable step in the right direction. LaCosse appears to have a shot to suit up Sunday against the Ravens, depending on what he's able -- or unable -- to do in the week's final two practice sessions.

  • Patriots' Matt LaCosse: Remains out

LaCosse (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Browns, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports. The same applies to Ryan Izzo (concussion), which means that Ben Watson and Eric Tomlinson will be serve as the team's tight end options this weekend against Cleveland.
