  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Returning to bench role

Ornelas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.

Ornelas will hit the bench after he started in each of the last three games, with the last two coming at third base while Josh Smith (glute) was out of the lineup. With Smith returning to his usual post at the hot corner for Sunday's series finale, however, Ornelas looks poised to see light usage moving forward as a utility infielder.

  • Luis Guillorme 3B | HOU

Angels' Luis Guillorme: Draws second straight start

Guillorme will start at third base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Guillorme has now started at third base in consecutive games, with the Angels facing right-handed pitchers in both of those contests. The right-handed-hitting Miguel Sano occupied the hot corner for the previous two matchups -- both against lefties -- so while Luis Rengifo (wrist) is on the injured list, Angels could be opting for a platoon at third base featuring the lefty-hitting Guillorme as the strong-side option.

  • Nick Loftin 1B | KC

Royals' Nick Loftin: Sitting again Sunday

Loftin is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Loftin is on the bench for a second straight game after starting the previous three games. Maikel Garcia will again shift to the hot corner while Michael Massey starts at second base.

  • Nicky Lopez 3B | COL

White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Taking seat Sunday

Lopez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.

Lopez will take a seat for the series finale in Miami in what appears to be a routine maintenance day. Lenyn Sosa will cover the keystone in place of Lopez, who had started each of the past five games while going 4-for-17 with three doubles, three walks, three runs and three RBI.

  • Jose Altuve 2B | HOU

Astros' Jose Altuve: Returns to starting nine

Altuve (hand) will start at second base and bat leadoff in Sunday's game against the Twins.

For just the fourth time all season, Altuve missed out on a start in Saturday's 9-3 loss while he recovered from a hand contusion stemming from being hit by a pitch in Friday's 13-12 win. The day off was apparently all Altuve needed to heal up from the bruise to his left hand, as he'll take back his usual spot in the field and atop the batting order for the series finale. Altuve had been running hot at the dish prior to sitting out Saturday, slashing .400/.449/.556 with two home runs and three stolen bases over his last 10 games.

  • Zack Gelof 2B | ATH

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Timely knock in big win

Gelof went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in a win over the Orioles on Saturday.

Gelof contributed to the Athletics' astounding seven-run second inning, lacing a two-bagger to left field that plated Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers. The 24-year-old is enduring a tougher-than-expected second big-league season after setting high expectations a rookie in 2023, but he's showing a bit of life at the plate of late with a .257 average and .794 OPS across 41 plate appearances in his last 10 games. Nevertheless, his Achilles heel continues to be consistent contact -- even during that encouraging stretch, Gelof has struck out at a bloated 39.0 percent clip.

  • Vaughn Grissom SS | LAA

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Building strength in hamstrings

Grissom is trying to regain strength in both hamstrings before the team maps out a plan for his return, MLB.com reports.

Grissom has been running the bases and moving better, per manager Alex Cora, but a rehab assignment is not imminent. He had been expected to be Boston's primary second baseman, but Grissom may not be guaranteed that role when he's ready. The Red Sox have been getting by with lefty hitters David Hamilton and Enmanuel Valdez for now.

  • Marcus Semien 2B | NYM

Rangers' Marcus Semien: Belts game-winning homer

Semien went 1-for-3 with a walk, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rays.

With the Rangers down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Semien got hold of a Kevin Kelly two-seamer on the inner half of the plate and drove it over the left-field wall for the game-winning hit. The second baseman snapped a 22-game homer drought with the blast, a stretch in which he'd stumbled to a .143/.196/.176 slash line. Semien's current .679 OPS on the season would be his lowest mark since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, but he's still on pace for his fourth straight campaign with at least 20 home runs and 80 RBI, and the 33-year-old has plenty of time to kick his offense into a higher gear.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Not facing southpaw

Massey is absent from the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies.

Massey will give way to Freddy Fermin at DH on Saturday with lefty Austin Gomber on the mound for Colorado. Massey is 3-for-19 with a pair of solo home runs in his last six games.

  • Nick Loftin 1B | KC

Royals' Nick Loftin: On bench Saturday

Loftin is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies.

Loftin will take a seat Saturday after making three consecutive starts. Maikel Garcia will shift to third base while Garrett Hampson plays second base.
