  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Tallies three hits, homer in rout

Hoerner went 3-for-6 with a solo home run and three runs scored in Tuesday's 20-9 win over the Reds. He also stole a base.

Hoerner did a little bit of everything in the blowout win, popping his eighth home run of the season and also recording his 26th stolen base. The infielder is closing in on his career high of 10 home runs but has already set a new career high in steals, and that's the category that should continue to fuel his fantasy value the rest of the year.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Placed on 10-day IL

The Cardinals placed Donovan on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right elbow strain.

The move to the IL comes as little surprise after manager Oliver Marmol said earlier in the day that Donovan will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair a torn flexor in his right (throwing) arm. Tommy Edman (wrist) was reinstated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Jose Fermin 2B | STL

Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Recalled from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

The Cardinals had plenty of holes to fill after unloading their roster prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, and Fermin will come up from Memphis to provide depth in St. Louis' infield. The 24-year-old is slashing .200/.347/.450 through 49 plate appearances in Triple-A.

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 2B | NYM

Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Begins rehab assignment

Bae (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Bae has been on the shelf since July 2 and is now set to begin the final stage of his recovery process. The Pirates haven't specified how long they will keep Bae on assignment, but he figures to be ready to return during Pittsburgh's weekend series with the Brewers.

  • Vinny Capra 3B | BOS

Pirates' Vinny Capra: Selected to MLB roster

The Pirates selected Capra's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Capra was traded from Toronto to Pittsburgh in late April and has since slashed .350/.457/.485 through 127 plate appearances with Indianapolis. The 27-year-old's defensive versatility could get him into the Pirates' lineup occasionally if his bat holds up in the majors.

  • Mets' Jeremiah Jackson: Acquired for Leone

The Mets acquired Jackson from the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for Dominic Leone, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

Jackson represents a nice return for a rental reliever, as the infielder was a second-round selection in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft and had posted a .768 OPS with 15 home runs and 21 steals through 82 games this season at Double-A Rocket City. The 23-year-old infielder will presumably join up with the Double-A affiliate of the Mets in Binghamton.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Needs season-ending surgery

Donovan will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair the flexor strain in his right arm, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Donovan hasn't been able to play the field since late June because of the lingering flexor strain, and the out-of-contention Cardinals will go ahead and address the issue now rather than waiting until the offseason. The 26-year-old super-utilityman is expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training in 2024. He finishes the 2023 campaign with a .281/.362/.419 batting line across 371 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Not in lineup Tuesday

Donovan is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Twins.

Donovan still can't throw due to a flexor strain and Jordan Walker is taking a turn as the Cardinals' designated hitter Tuesday against Minnesota. Taylor Motter will play second base with Nolan Gorman (back) also still sidelined.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Remains out Tuesday

Gorman (back) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Twins.

Gorman was scratched from Sunday's series finale against the Cubs due to back tightness and isn't ready to return even after Monday's scheduled team off day. Taylor Motter will start at second base for the Cardinals on Tuesday as Jordan Walker takes a turn as the designated hitter.

  • Jake Alu LF | WAS

Nationals' Jake Alu: Gets look at third base

Alu is starting at third base and batting eighth Tuesday against the Brewers.

Alu will be making his first career start at third base, after his other four starts with Washington this season came in left field. The utility man was called up Monday after the Nationals traded Jeimer Candelario to the Cubs. Alu was slashing .298/.360/.428 with five home runs and 16 steals through 74 games this season at Triple-A Rochester and could get an extended look with the big club over the final two months of the 2023 campaign.
