  • Red Sox's Jamie Westbrook: Sent to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Westbrook to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Westbrook saw regular reps at second base against left-handed pitching but did little with them, going just 2-for-22 at the plate this month. Nick Sogard was called up from Triple-A Worcester and will replace Westbrook on the 26-man active roster as the short-side platoon mate for David Hamilton at the keystone.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Leaves early with apparent injury

Palacios was removed from Wednesday's game against the Marlins with an apparent lower-body injury, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He walked in his lone plate appearance, stole his 19th base of the season and came around to score a run before exiting the game.

Palacios appeared to hurt his knee while sliding into second base on the steal. Though he was able to stay in the game and scored on Jonny DeLuca's RBI triple, Polanco ultimately remained in the dugout when the Rays took the field for the top of the third. Dylan Carlson came off the bench to play left field in place of Palacios, who can be considered day-to-day until the Rays provide an update on his status.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Out of lineup again

Gorman isn't in the lineup for Wednesday contest versus the Rangers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

The Cardinals are facing a lefty in Andrew Heaney, and the lefty-hitting Gorman is now on the bench for a fourth straight matchup with a southpaw. He's exiting the starting nine five times across the last seven games, even sitting once against a righty during that span. Brendan Donovan will occupy second base Wednesday.

  • Willi Castro LF | COL

    Twins' Willi Castro: Idle Wednesday

Castro is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Castro will exit the starting nine for the first time since July 10, breaking a streak of 13 consecutive starts. The versatile 27-year-old has picked up 10-plus starts at five different positions this season, but he's been seeing most of his action at second base of late following Edouard Julien's demotion to Triple-A St. Paul last week.

  • Brice Turang 2B | MIL

Brewers' Brice Turang: Taking seat versus southpaw

Turang is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Atlanta is sending left-hander Chris Sale to the hill, so the lefty-hitting Turang will begin the contest on the bench. Andruw Monasterio will occupy second base for the Brewers.

  • Zack Gelof 2B | ATH

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Reaches three times in win

Gelof went 2-for-3 with a walk in a win over the Giants on Tuesday. He was also caught stealing twice.

Gelof's small-ball production stood in stark contrast to that of his teammates, as the Athletics scored all five runs off home runs. The multi-hit effort was an especially welcome sight for Gelof, who entered the night mired in a 1-for-25 slump that had encompassed his previous seven games. Gelof had last tallied multiple hits in a game July 9, and despite Tuesday's success, his average remains just below the Mendoza Line at .196 due to his recent skid. The pair of failed steal attempts were an outlier as well, considering Gelof had gone an impressive 12-for-13 in that category this season coming into Tuesday.

  • Brooks Baldwin SS | CHW

White Sox's Brooks Baldwin: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Baldwin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Baldwin will get his first day off since he was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte earlier this month. The rookie infielder has had a tough time getting going in his first taste of the majors, going 7-for-40 with a 15:2 K:BB in 12 games. Lenyn Sosa will start at second base for the White Sox on Wednesday.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Massey is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the White Sox.

The White Sox have a right-hander in Drew Thorpe on the rubber, but the left-handed-hitting Massey will nonetheless begin the contest on the bench. With Massey out of the lineup, Freddy Fermin will serve as the Royals' designated hitter, while Maikel Garcia starts at second base.

  • Otto Lopez SS | MIA

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Heading to bench Wednesday

Lopez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Though he's checking out of the lineup after starting both of the past two games, Lopez's short-term playing-time outlook has been aided by the Marlins' decision to demote trade-deadline pickup Connor Norby to Triple-A Jacksonville following his acquisition from the Orioles. Norby looked like a candidate to serve as Miami's everyday second baseman and should get the opportunity to do so later on this season, but for now, Lopez will likely remain the main option at the position.

  • Jorge Polanco 1B | NYM

Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Goes yard against Red Sox

Polanco went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an RBI double and two additional runs scored during Tuesday's 10-6 win over the Red Sox.

Polanco lifted his 10th homer of the season Tuesday, tagging James Paxton for a solo shot in the fourth inning. The second baseman has been hot at the plate, clubbing four homers in his last five games and going a combined 7-for-19 with eight RBI and eight runs scored during that stretch. On the year, Polanco has recorded career worsts in OPS (.649) and strikeout rate (30.5 percent).
