Reds' Nick Senzel: Placed on injured list

Senzel (illness) was placed on the injured list Saturday.

The fact that the Reds' announcement merely referred to the "injured list" rather than the "10-day injured list" suggests Senzel has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list. He's been battling an illness over the past few days, though there hadn't been any previous indication that his illness was coronavirus. Players can hit the COVID-19 injured list merely with COVID-like symptoms, however, which appears to be what's going on here per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. If he continues to avoid a positive test, he could be back within the next few days, but if he tests positive for the virus he'd likely miss more time. Daniel Duarte was recalled to take his place on the roster.

  • Kyle Farmer 3B | ATL

Reds' Kyle Farmer: Leading off Saturday

Farmer is starting at shortstop and leading off Saturday against the Dodgers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

It's no surprise that Farmer is in the lineup, as he's started every game this season. However, his presence atop the order is significant given that he has primarily hit eighth across his first eight appearances. With southpaw Julio Urias on the mound and Jonathan India (hamstring) sidelined, Farmer will get his chance to lead off.

    Reds' Nick Senzel: Remains out

Senzel (illness) is out of the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Senzel remains out for the fourth consecutive game, but he was reportedly available off the bench Friday and the same could be true Saturday. That likely means he'll avoid a stint on the injured list, though his lingering absence creates doubt. Aristides Aquino has gotten more regular playing time in Senzel's absence, and he'll hit sixth while starting in right field Saturday.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

    Pirates' Kevin Newman: Sitting Saturday

Newman is not in the lineup Saturday against the Nationals.

Newman started the first six games of the season at shortstop but has now been on the bench for two in a row. Cole Tucker will take over for him this time around.

  • Nick Madrigal 3B | LAA

Cubs' Nick Madrigal: Not starting Saturday

Madrigal isn't starting Saturday's game against the Rockies.

Madrigal went 3-for-8 with a double, two runs and a walk in the last two games, and he'll get a breather Saturday. Jonathan Villar will start at the keystone and bat second.

  • Jace Peterson SS | ARI

Brewers' Jace Peterson: Gets breather Saturday

Peterson isn't starting Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Peterson will take a seat with left-hander Steven Matz on the mound for St. Louis. Mike Brosseau will start at the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Phillies' Jean Segura: Still not starting

Segura (hand) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Miami.

Segura will be excluded from the lineup for a third straight game after he was hit by a pitch on his hand Wednesday. Bryson Stott will shift to second base while Johan Camargo starts at the hot corner.

  • Nolan Arenado 3B | ARI

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Homers, reaches four times

Arenado went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks, three RBI and two runs scored in a 10-1 win Friday in Milwaukee.

Arenado has been on an absolute tear to start 2022, hitting safely in every game and having multiple RBI in all but one appearance. The six-time All-Star walked and scored in the first, had an RBI single in the second, and capped off the night with a two-run homer in the ninth. He now has seven extra-base hits, 12 RBI and an amazing 1.087 SLG on the young season.

Reds' Nick Senzel: Out with illness

Senzel's absence from the Reds' last three lineups was due to illness, but he'll be available off the bench Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Reds insisted Senzel wasn't injured despite the fact that his absences came immediately after an outfield collision with Tommy Pham on Tuesday, and it appears as though that's accurate. The fact that Senzel is sick rather than injured is seemingly good news, as he's dealt with more than his fair share of injuries in recent years. The Reds haven't said when he'll be back in the lineup, but the fact that he's available off the bench Friday likely means he'll be ready to go soon.

Reds' Nick Senzel: Remains out of lineup

Senzel will sit for the third straight game Friday against the Dodgers.

Senzel collided with Tommy Pham in the outfield Tuesday against the Guardians but remained in the game. He hasn't appeared in any capacity since then. The Reds claimed that Senzel's absence wasn't injury-related Thursday, but each subsequent day he finds himself on the bench makes that harder to believe. Jake Fraley remains the starter in center field.
