Newman has a modest four-game hitting streak, during which he's gone 6-for-13 with three RBI and a pair of runs. He's still sitting on a lackluster .226/.265/.310 slash line through 550 plate appearances overall, and he's gone seven games without an extra-base hit.

    Manager David Bell said Friday that Farmer could miss the remainder of the season after he tweaked his oblique prior to the series opener against the Pirates, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

    Farmer was initially diagnosed with left abdominal soreness after he was scratched from Friday's lineup, and the injury could keep him out for the final two games of the regular season. Jose Barrero will likely continue to fill in at shortstop if the 31-year-old is held out.

    Cardinals' Edmundo Sosa: Sitting again Friday

    Sosa (wrist) is not in the lineup Friday against the Cubs, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

    Sosa will be on the bench for the seventh straight contest as he continues to manage a right wrist injury, The Cardinals have secured their place in the playoffs, so the 25-year-old won't be rushed back this weekend. However, he'll be available off the bench in Friday's matchup, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Paul DeJong will receive another start at shortstop.
