  • Jonah Heim C | ATH

Rangers' Jonah Heim: Receives maintenance day

Heim is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus Detroit.

Heim started the past three games and will take a maintenance day after going 0-for-11 with two walks and a run scored during that stretch. Meibrys Viloria will work behind the plate and bat eighth Sunday.

  • Tigers' Tucker Barnhart: Out of Sunday's lineup

Barnhart is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

Manager A.J. Hinch has alternated his starting catcher over the past five games, and that trend will continue Sunday after Barnhart went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Saturday's contest. Eric Haase will work behind the plate and bat fifth in the series finale at Texas.

  • Pirates' Tyler Heineman: Gets Sunday off

Heineman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

Heineman and Jason Delay have now alternated turns behind the plate in each of the past 10 games, with the two backstops drawing five starts apiece. Expect the timeshare to remain in place unless of one of the two catchers clearly separates himself from the other from a performance standpoint.

  • Tomas Nido C | DET

Mets' Tomas Nido: Sits out series finale

Nido is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Nido is on the bench for the series finale, but after starting in three of the Mets' last four games following his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, he may have overtaken James McCann as the team's No. 1 backstop. For the season, Nido has produced a lowly .221/.266/.261 line across 249 plate appearances, but the Mets put a lot of value on the work he does defensively.

  • Elias Diaz C | TEX

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Gets rest Sunday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Diaz will get a breather in the series finale after catching in the previous two contests while going 1-for-8 with a double and three RBI. Brian Serven will spell Diaz behind the plate Sunday.

  • Max Stassi C | SF

Angels' Max Stassi: Not in Sunday's lineup

Stassi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Toronto, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

Stassi is 1-for-39 with 14 strikeouts over his past 10 games and will head to the bench for Sunday's contest. Kurt Suzuki will take over behind the plate for the Halos.

  • Red Sox's Kevin Plawecki: Takes seat Sunday

Plawecki is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Plawecki will get a breather for the day game after he went 3-for-7 with a double and two RBI while catching each of the past two days. Reese McGuire will step in behind the plate for the series finale.

  • Rays' Francisco Mejia: On bench again

Mejia is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Mejia will take a seat for the second game in a row while Christian Bethancourt gets another turn behind the plate. The two backstops may be moving into a timeshare at the position after Mejia went 0-for-12 across his last three starts.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Gets breather in series finale

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Ruiz will take a seat for the third consecutive Sunday while Riley Adams receives a turn behind the plate. The 24-year-old will put a four-game hitting streak on hold while he heads to the bench.

  • Braves' Chadwick Tromp: Starts up rehab assignment

Tromp (quadriceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

Tromp has been on the injured list since Aug. 16 with a left quad strain, but he'll likely need only a few games in the minors to get back up to full speed. With Travis d'Arnaud and William Contreras entrenched as Atlanta's top two backstops, the team doesn't have an immediate need to rush Tromp back, though he could be a candidate to join the club as a No. 3 catcher when the roster expands to 28 men in September.
