Staumont (back) is feeling better than expected Saturday, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.

Staumont's back tightened up after he slipped on the mound while delivering a pitch Friday against the Twins. He was removed from the game, but manager Mike Matheny provided an encouraging update Saturday. However, Matheny said that the team will proceed with caution in order to prevent a more serious issue.

Hendriks fired a scoreless ninth inning in an extra-innings win over the Astros on Friday, allowing one hit and no walks while recording two strikeouts.

The closer filled a different role Friday, as he was asked to preserve a 2-2 tie in the ninth. Hendriks succeeded with relatively minimal trouble, needing just 10 pitches, nine which he threw for strikes, with swinging strikeouts of Yuli Gurriel and Carlos Correa to open the frame. The 31-year-old has not been scored on in six straight appearances after allowing a game-tying home run to Jason Castro on Opening Night against the Angels.

Akin was recalled from the Orioles' alternate training site Saturday.

Akin will join the major-league roster for the first time after putting up solid results over four years in the minors. The southpaw served as a starter in the minor leagues, but he could take on a bullpen role with the Orioles for the time being. Over 24 starts with Triple-A Norfolk last season, Akin posted a 4.73 ERA and 131:61 K:BB over 112.1 innings.

Covey was recalled by the Red Sox on Saturday.

Covey began the season on the major-league roster but headed to the alternate training site after he had a rough appearance early in the season. Ryan Weber was optioned to the alternate training site to make room in the rotation.

Weber has made three starts this season, but none have been good. He's thrown a total of just 10 innings, allowing 11 runs on 15 hits, including five homers. His 3:9 K:BB is perhaps even worse than his 9.90 ERA and 2.40 WHIP. The Red Sox are desperate for help in their beat-up rotation, but it's not clear that Weber can provide that help. Dylan Covey was recalled in a corresponding move.

Farmer allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just a single batter in Friday's 17-13, 11-inning win over the Pirates.

Like a number of pitchers in this wild game, Farmer was hit hard. The righty entered the contest having allowed just one walk and no hits across his first five innings pitched this season, so it's probably best to just chalk up the rough appearance as an off night. Farmer should bounce back and continue to serve as a fairly reliable option for the Tigers in a setup role ahead of Joe Jimenez, who also struggled Friday and blew his first save of the season by allowing three runs in the ninth.

Abreu was appointed as the Yankees' 29th man for Saturday's doubleheader.

Abreu was on the taxi squad for the weekend series, and he'll step in to fill a bullpen role for the twin bill Saturday after Nick Tropeano was designated for assignment. If Abreu makes a relief appearance, it will be his major-league debut. While he won't be on the active roster past Saturday for the time being, the right-hander could join the bullpen on a more regular basis at some point this year.

Burdi was recalled from the White Sox's alternate training site Saturday.

Burdi has been limited over the past two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery and a dislocated knee, but he'll join the major-league bullpen for the first time to help bolster the bullpen. The 2016 first-round pick was thought to be major-league ready in 2017 prior to his injuries. The right-hander posted a 5.70 ERA and 40:18 K:BB over 30 innings across 28 appearances (one start) in the minors over the past two seasons.

Bummer (biceps) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday.

Bummer was removed from Friday's win against Cleveland after throwing 30 pitches and will miss several games as a result of a left biceps strain. The southpaw had been dominant out of the bullpen for the White Sox to begin the season, recording a 1.23 ERA and 12:4 K:BB over 7.1 innings across seven appearances. Evan Marshall and Steve Cishek could see an uptick in higher-leverage opportunities while Bummer is sidelined.

Weber didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-3 win over the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out three.

The Red Sox continue to keep Weber on a short leash. The right-hander threw 64 pitches (39 strikes) before getting the hook, and he has yet to finish the fourth inning in any of his three starts so far. Weber's 9.90 ERA and 2.40 WHIP certainly don't provide the club with much reason to extend him further. Boston's rotation woes give the team little option but to keep trotting the 29-year-old out there, with his next start scheduled for Wednesday at home against the Rays, but Weber is far from being any kind of fantasy asset.
