Cubs' Yency Almonte: Set for season-ending surgery

Almonte will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the season, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Almonte was shut down from throwing Wednesday after receiving a second opinion on his strained right shoulder, and he'll now elect to undergo surgery rather than restart his rehab process. A clearer timeline for his recovery will likely emerge once he goes under the knife, but the Cubs aren't expecting the 30-year-old righty to return to action until some point in the 2025 season. He'll finish the 2024 campaign with a 3.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP alongside a 20:8 K:BB over 15.2 innings.

  • Drey Jameson RP | ARI

    Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Throws bullpen

Jameson (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Friday marked Jameson's first bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last September. The 26-year-old isn't expected to pitch this season, but Friday's bullpen is an indication that Jameson is progressing well in his rehab.

  • Nick Ramirez RP | LAD

Dodgers' Nick Ramirez: Back in minors

The Dodgers optioned Ramirez to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

After being recalled from Triple-A and allowing four earned runs in two innings Thursday, Ramirez will now return to the minor leagues. Gus Varland will come up from Oklahoma City to replace Ramirez and give the Dodgers another fresh arm in the bullpen.

  • Gus Varland RP | WAS

Dodgers' Gus Varland: Recalled by Dodgers

The Dodgers recalled Varland from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Varland will take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by southpaw Nick Ramirez, who was optioned to Oklahoma City in a corresponding move. Varland made seven appearances out of the Dodgers' bullpen before being sent down to the minors May 15, posting a 3.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over six innings. Over his last four minor-league outings, Varland has given up two hits and one walk while striking out four across four scoreless frames.

  • Riley O'Brien RP | STL

Cardinals' Riley O'Brien: Rehab assignment pending

O'Brien (forearm) will throw a live batting practice session Saturday and will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Springfield on Tuesday if the live BP session goes well, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

O'Brien suffered a setback in his recovery June 23, but he's nearing a return to game action, with Saturday's live BP his last checkpoint to clear before starting a rehab assignment. O'Brien has been shelved since March 31 but is on track for a late July return.

  • Luis Ortiz RP | NYM

Phillies' Luis Ortiz: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Phillies transferred Ortiz (shoulder/ankle/forearm) to the 60-day injured list Friday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Ortiz has been out virtually all season with injuries, first to his ankle and more recently to his shoulder and forearm. This transaction doesn't alter his timetable since he's eligible for activation at any time, but it's not clear when Ortiz might be ready to pitch again.

  • Yunior Marte RP | CIN

Phillies' Yunior Marte: Optioned to Triple-A

The Phillies optioned Marte to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Marte had pitched two of the last three days, so the Phillies are replacing him with a fresh bullpen arm. Tyler Phillips will take Marte's spot on the 26-man roster.

  • Bryan Hoeing RP | SD

    Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Officially activated

Hoeing (hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and is starting Friday's game against the White Sox.

Hoeing was shelved May 3 due to a strained left hamstring, and after making five rehab appearances since June 14, he'll rejoin the active roster. While the 27-year-old is listed as Miami's starting pitcher, he shouldn't be expected to handle a typical starter's workload considering he hasn't completed three innings in any of his rehab outings and was used out of the bullpen before being injured. That being said, Hoeing has been utilized as a starter in previous seasons and could see multiple starts given the Marlins' numerous pitching injuries.

  • Chris Roycroft RP | STL

Cardinals' Chris Roycroft: Back with St. Loo

The Cardinals recalled Roycroft from Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

Roycroft has bounced back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis this season, throwing 15.2 innings with the Cardinals and owning a 2.87 ERA. Jacob Bosiokovic was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Jacob Bosiokovic: Sent back to minors

The Cardinals optioned Bosiokovic to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

Bosiokovic's first stint in the big leagues lasted less than a week, and he did not make an appearance. He's being replaced on the roster and in the bullpen by Chris Roycroft.
