The Mariners designated Muckenhirn for assignment Wednesday.

The southpaw will move off the Mariners' 40-man roster with Seattle needing to clear a spot for right-hander Emerson Hancock, whose contract was selected from Double-A Arkansas ahead of his first MLB start Wednesday versus the Padres. Since being acquired in a trade with the Mets on July 3, Muckenhirn has pitched exclusively at Triple-A Tacoma, where he turned in a 9.35 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over 8.2 innings.

The Mariners optioned Sweet to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

Sweet will cede his spot on Seattle's 26-man active roster to right-hander Emerson Hancock, who had his contract selected from Double-A Arkansas in advance of his first MLB start Wednesday versus the Padres. After getting called up from Tacoma shortly after the All-Star break, Sweet made just two relief appearances for Seattle, giving up two earned runs over two innings.

Martinez, recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day, allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings during a loss to the Rangers on Tuesday. He recorded five strikeouts and did not factor into the decision.

The young right-hander was afforded an 82-pitch assignment right out of the gate in his first taste of major-league action since May 26. Martinez ate up some valuable innings in the process, getting all but the last out of the night for the Athletics after starter JP Sears exited following four laborious frames. Martinez is slotting into a bullpen role for the time being, but as the length of Tuesday's appearance indicates, he's capable of serving in a bulk-relief capacity or even moving into the rotation if necessary.

Brash secured his 16th hold in the Mariners' win over the Padres on Tuesday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit and a walk, threw a wild pitch and recorded a strikeout.

It was an eventful frame for Brash. He displayed some of the control issues he's gotten a better handle on this season, but the hard-throwing right-hander still managed to escape unscathed and post his seventh straight scoreless appearance. Brash has primarily filled a setup role since the trade of Paul Sewald at the deadline to the Diamondbacks, although he has seen one save chance in that span that he successfully converted. Andres Munoz is proving capable of manning the closer role for the time being, but Brash should continue drawing plenty of hold opportunities down the stretch and also log the occasional ninth-inning assignment.

Gilbreath (elbow) was cleared to resume playing catch shortly after the All-Star break and was throwing off flat ground from up to 90 feet as of July 29, MLB.com reports.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery March 14, Gilbreath isn't a candidate to pitch for the Rockies in 2023, and his absence could even stretch into the early portion of the 2024 season. The fact that he's been able to begin a throwing program four months after surgery can at least be viewed as a positive sign at this early stage of his recovery.

Carasiti (shoulder) said July 29 that he's been able to resume playing catch, MLB.com reports.

Carasiti said he's responding well to treatment for his inflamed right shoulder, but he still has a few more hurdles in the recovery process to clear before his return from the 15-day injured list can be considered imminent. Prior to landing on the shelf, Carasiti compiled a 7.06 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across 21.2 innings out of the Colorado bullpen.

Mears (oblique) has been playing catch since late July but hasn't yet been cleared to throw off a mound, MLB.com reports.

Mears has been slow to bounce back from a left oblique strain, which forced him to the 15-day injured list June 28. Since he'll need to throw multiple bullpen sessions, face hitters in live batting practice and complete a rehab assignment prior to being activated, Mears doesn't look as though he'll be ready to rejoin the Rockies' bullpen until late August at the soonest.

Smith (4-4) took the loss in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs. He allowed two hits, including a home run, while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.

Smith was called upon in the eighth inning of a tense 2-2 tie and proceeded to serve up a decisive home run to Mike Tauchman on a center-cut, 3-2 fastball. Prior to Tuesday, Smith had seven consecutive scoreless appearances, during which he allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out eight across seven innings.

Krehbiel was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.

He's moved off the 26-man active roster as the Orioles make room for right-hander Jacob Webb, who was claimed off waivers Monday from the Angels. Krehbiel has made two scoreless appearances during his brief time with the Orioles this season.

Walter was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Walter has collected a 3.07 ERA over 14.2 innings covering six appearances for the Red Sox this season. The left-hander will give the club an option to eat some innings out of the bullpen.
