  • Nick Pivetta SP | SD

Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Evens record with victory

Pivetta (2-2) earned the win over Toronto on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings.

Pivetta was dinged for a solo home run in each of the second and third innings, but he gave up only one additional run and completed a season-high six innings to notch his first quality start of the campaign. The right-hander racked up 14 swinging strikes and punched out six batters, marking the fourth time in six starts that he's reached the latter total. Pivetta was tagged for six runs in a start against the Angels on April 15, but he's given up four runs or fewer in each of his other outings this season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Alexander: Vultures first win of year

Alexander (1-0) retired the lone batter he faced and earned the win in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets.

Alexander was the ultimate vulture in this one, as he only threw a single pitch but escaped as the pitcher of record in Detroit's 6-5 comeback victory. The lefty hasn't been much of a fantasy factor this season out of the bullpen with a 5.17 ERA across 15.2 innings and he's yet to make any spot starts after starting 32 times the last two years.

  • Brendan White RP | SEA

Tigers' Brendan White: Back in Triple-A

The Tigers returned White to Triple-A Toledo after Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets.

Detroit chose not to use White out of the bullpen in either of Wednesday's games, so he will have to wait a bit longer for his first major-league appearance. However, the 24-year-old reliever holds a 2.08 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 13 innings over nine appearances in Toledo, so it may not be long before he gets another chance on the big-league roster.

  • Javier Assad RP | CHC

Cubs' Javier Assad: Recalled from Triple-A

Assad was recalled Wednesday from Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Assad will presumably work out of the bullpen, though it's worth noting that the Cubs have yet to announce a starter for Thursday's series finale against the Nationals. The 25-year-old right-hander has allowed eight earned runs over 7.1 innings (one start, two relief appearances) this season at the MLB level.

  • Jose Quijada RP | LAA

Angels' Jose Quijada: Will undergo Tommy John surgery

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters before Wednesday's game against the Cardinals that Quijada (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

Quijada sought a second opinion from doctors, and it appears that both groups recommended the reconstructive elbow surgery. The left-handed reliever will miss the rest of the 2023 campaign and he'll likely miss time to begin the 2024 season as well.

  • Twins' Ronny Henriquez: Beginning rehab assignment

Henriquez (elbow) is beginning a rehab assignment Wednesday with Low-A Fort Myers, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports.

Henriquez battled right posterior elbow soreness throughout much of spring training, but he was able to begin a throwing program toward the end of March and now the 22-year-old is ready again for live competition. He posted a 2.31 ERA across his first 11.2 major-league innings last season with the Twins and should be an option for their bullpen by mid-May.

  • Camilo Doval RP | SF

Giants' Camilo Doval: Earns another save

Doval picked up the save Wednesday against the Astros. He allowed a walk while logging a strikeout over one scoreless inning.

Doval has earned saves in back-to-back games against the Astros, improving to 5-for-6 in save opportunities this season. The 25-year-old closer has been solid of late, allowing just one run in his last six appearances (five innings). Doval's ERA is down to 2.77 with a 1.23 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB through his first 13 innings this season.

  • Kenley Jansen RP | DET

Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Likely available Thursday

Jansen (back) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Assuming he bounces back well, the closer is expected to be available to pitch in Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays. Jansen hasn't made an appearance since Saturday due to back tightness.

  • Cardinals' Wilking Rodriguez: Undergoes shoulder surgery

Rodriguez underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his right shoulder and will be sidelined 4-to-6 months, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Rodriguez was placed on the injured list prior to Opening Day after experiencing shoulder tightness toward the end of Cardinals camp this spring. After undergoing surgery, the Rule 5 Draft pick looks likely to miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign. He logged three rehab appearances at Triple-A Memphis last month before his shoulder began barking again.

  • Tommy Kahnle RP | BOS

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Nearing rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Kahnle (biceps) is close to beginning a rehab assignment, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Kahnle will throw another bullpen session Thursday, which could be the last step before he reports to a minor-league affiliate. He's expected to require 4-to-6 rehab appearances before being activated, setting him up to return in late May or early June if all goes well.
