Mariners' Jhonathan Diaz: Returns to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Diaz to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

The 27-year-old was called up by the Mariners on Friday but didn't see action during his brief time with the team. Diaz has made one start for the Mariners this season and allowed three earned runs with a 4:1 K:BB over 5.1 innings. He's pitched to a 3.26 ERA across 77.1 frames at Tacoma.

  • Jose Soriano RP | LAA

Angels' Jose Soriano: Activated ahead of start

The Angels reinstated Soriano (abdomen) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

Soriano landed on the injured list June 20 due to an infection in his abdomen, but he'll now return following a minimum-length stay to start against the Athletics. He could be under a pitch count during his first start back, but he'll still be in a position to succeed versus a weak Oakland offense. Andrew Wantz (elbow) was placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Keider Montero SP | DET

    Tigers' Keider Montero: Starting Wednesday

Montero will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Wednesday in Minnesota, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Montero will be filling in for Jack Flaherty (back), who is having his turn skipped. The Tigers will also need an additional starter for later this week with Casey Mize (hamstring) headed to the 15-day injured list. Montero has permitted nine runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings for the Tigers in 2024.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Skipping start this week

Flaherty will receive a second pain-killing injection in his back and will have his next start pushed back to next week, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Flaherty had been slated to start Wednesday in Minnesota but will be held back until next week for a home matchup against the Guardians. It's worrisome that Flaherty has now had two turns skipped over the last month with back problems, but it appears he will again avoid a stint on the injured list. Keider Montero will start Wednesday in Flaherty's place.

  • J.P. France SP | HOU

Astros' J.P. France: Has surgery for capsule tear

France underwent surgery Monday to repair a capsule tear in his right shoulder.

It had been reported previously that France was set to undergo season-ending surgery, and the specifics of the procedure have now been revealed. France is on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Sugar Land but could be a candidate for the major-league 60-day IL should the Astros need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Keider Montero SP | DET

Tigers' Keider Montero: Joins Tigers in Minnesota

Montero has joined the Tigers in Minnesota and is expected to enter the rotation in place of the injured Casey Mize (hamstring), Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

It's not known yet which day Montero will start, but he will join the rotation sometime this week while Mize misses some time. The right-hander has made two appearances with the Tigers this season -- one as a starter and one as a bulk reliever -- and has allowed nine runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings.

  • Luis Garcia SP | NYY

Astros' Luis Garcia: Moving up to Double-A

Astros manager Joe Espada said on Tuesday in an interview with SportsTalk 790 that Garcia's (elbow) next rehab start will come Thursday at Double-A Corpus Christi, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Garcia threw one inning with the Astros' Florida Complex League affiliate this past Friday in his first rehab appearance. It's not clear what his targeted pitch count is for Thursday's outing, but Garcia will need a handful of rehab starts before becoming an option to join the Astros' rotation. He's making his way back from Tommy John surgery.

  • Keider Montero SP | DET

Tigers' Keider Montero: Likely candidate to sub for Mize

Montero is a likely candidate to start in place of the injured Casey Mize (hamstring) after the latter was scratched from a scheduled start Monday with Triple-A Toledo, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Mize is expected to land on the 15-day injured list with a strained hamstring, and it looks like Montero will be the choice to take his spot. Mize's next turn had been scheduled for Saturday in Cincinnati, although the Tigers could choose to alter the order of their rotation. Montero has made one start and one bulk-relief appearance for Detroit this season, allowing nine runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings.

  • Casey Mize SP | DET

Tigers' Casey Mize: Likely headed to injured list

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said in an interview Tuesday that Mize (hamstring) is a likely candidate to be placed on the 15-day injured list, Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reports.

Mize had to depart Sunday's start against the Angels with a left hamstring issue. While the initial hope was that he was merely dealing with a cramp, Hinch said Tuesday that it's more serious than that. Mize would be held out at least through the All-Star break if he is indeed placed on the IL. Matt Manning and Keider Montero are candidates to take Mize's spot in the Tigers' rotation.

  • Ky Bush P | CHW

White Sox's Ky Bush: Headed to Triple-A

Bush was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Bush will move up a level in the White Sox minor-league system after he produced a 2.12 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 78 strikeouts over 80.2 innings in 14 starts with Double-A Birmingham this season. With Chicago completely out of the postseason picture and expected to be sellers at the trade deadline, it's possible that Bush could find his way to the major-league roster down the road if he impresses at the Triple-A level.
