  • Ryne Nelson SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Lands on 15-day IL

The Diamondbacks placed Nelson (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Friday.

Nelson left Thursday's game against the Rockies after he took a comebacker off his arm in the second inning. Nelson will be replaced on the active roster by left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who will make his season debut Friday against the Giants. Nelson has started four games this season, posting a 4.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB over 15.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Recalled for season debut

The Diamondbacks recalled Montgomery from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Montgomery made two tune-up starts in Triple-A, surrendering nine earned runs across 7.2 innings while striking out nine batters and walking five. While his minor-league numbers aren't exactly encouraging, the 31-year-old southpaw is still expected to be a quality contributor to Arizona's starting rotation after posting a 3.20 ERA across 188.2 innings between St. Louis and Texas last year. Ryne Nelson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • A.J. Puk RP | ARI

Marlins' A.J. Puk: Another rough outing

Puk (0-4) took the loss Friday against the Cubs, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks over three innings. He struck out four.

It was another short outing for the southpaw as Chicago scored three runs over the first two innings before putting up four more in the third. Puk's failed to pitch more than 4.2 innings in any of his starts so far and sports an ugly 9.22 ERA with a 2.63 WHIP while issuing a league-high 17 walks across 13.2 innings. With Braxton Garrett (shoulder) inching closer to a return, the Marlins could elect to move Puk back to the bullpen, where he had considerably more success last season.

  • Cubs' Jameson Taillon: Sharp in season debut

Taillon (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Marlins, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over five innings.

Taillon didn't show any signs of rust in his first start of the campaign, holding the Marlins to a Bryan De La Cruz solo homer in the fourth inning. It's an encouraging effort from the 32-year-old right-hander, who went 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA in an inconsistent 2023 season. He's currently in line to face the Astros at home in his next start.

  • Dakota Hudson SP | LAA

Rockies' Dakota Hudson: Mariners-Rockies game postponed

Hudson and the Rockies will not play Friday after their game versus the Mariners was postponed due to inclement weather, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. Emerson Hancock and Hudson had been scheduled to start but now figure to be pushed back a day to Saturday.

  • Marco Gonzales RP | TEX

Pirates' Marco Gonzales: Shut down for two more weeks

Gonzales (forearm) will remain shut down for the next couple weeks, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Gonzales has been sidelined since last week with a left forearm muscle strain. He is not expected to require surgery, but between being shut down for multiple weeks and then a build-up period, it sounds like it will be a month or more before he'll be an option for the Pirates again.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Phillies' Taijuan Walker: Will make another rehab start

Walker (shoulder) will make one more rehab start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday before rejoining the Phillies' rotation, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

The Phillies had considered having Walker make his next appearance with the big club, but they opted to give him one more tune-up. That sets Walker up for his season debut next weekend in San Diego. Spencer Turnbull has pitched well in his place but could lose his rotation spot once Walker returns.

  • Quinn Priester SP | MIL

Pirates' Quinn Priester: Confirmed as Friday's starter

Priester was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and is starting Friday's game against the Red Sox.

It'll be Priester's first MLB appearance of the campaign after he missed out on Pittsburgh's Opening Day roster. The 23-year-old righty struggled to a 7.74 ERA over 10 outings in his first taste of the big leagues in 2023, but he pitched well at Triple-A early this season with a 3.95 ERA and 20:5 K:BB across 13.2 frames.

  • Noah Davis SP | PIT

Rockies' Noah Davis: Back in big leagues

Davis was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque by the Rockies on Friday.

Davis is taking the roster spot of Kyle Freeland (elbow). Freeland had been slated to start Saturday against the Mariners, but Peter Lambert is also an option to make that start. Davis has collected a 6.62 ERA and 21:10 K:BB over 17.2 innings covering four starts with Albuquerque this season.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Heads to IL with strained elbow

Freeland was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Rockies on Friday, retroactive to April 16, with a left elbow strain.

Freeland had been slated to start Saturday in spite of an injury to his right (non-throwing) shoulder that he suffered while pinch running. However, he now has a different, more serious injury to deal with. It's not clear at this point how much time Freeland might miss. Noah Davis has taken Freeland's spot on the roster, though Peter Lambert will take his spot in the rotation.
