Flaherty managed to keep the Reds off the board, but he ran into trouble in the fifth inning, allowing back-to-back hits before drilling the third batter of the frame. Luckily, he got Yasiel Puig to pop out to second base, and the bullpen was able to record the final two outs of the inning without letting a run cross the plate. The 23-year-old hasn't picked up a win since May 14, despite allowing just two runs over his last three starts.

It's unclear if he'll make a standard start his next time out or follow an opener, but his next appearance could come at home against the Giants next weekend.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Dealing with abdominal injury

Smyly allowed three baserunners and a run to score in the first inning, but he shut down the Pirates through five scoreless innings to record his first quality start. Smyly picked up eight swinging strikes on his curveball and only allowed one hit with his fastball. Smyly will make his next start Sunday against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Exits with apparent injury

  • Tyler Mahle SP | ATL

    Reds' Tyler Mahle: Throws Sunday

Mahle (hamstring) threw before Sunday's game against the Cardinals, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Mahle is battling a sore left hamstring that he suffered during his last start July 20. He hopes to be able to make his next start, and the fact that he was able to throw prior to the game is a positive sign. However, If Mahle is not ready in time for the outing, Lucas Sims would be the likely candidate to take his turn in the rotation.

  • Pirates' Trevor Williams: Could start Monday

Williams (illness) could start Monday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Williams was scheduled to start Saturday but ultimately had his start skipped due to a severe illness. He appears to be trending in the right direction, though he has not yet been confirmed as Monday's starter.

  • Cole Hamels SP | SD

Cubs' Cole Hamels: Next steps unclear

Hamels (oblique) may begin a rehab assignment soon, but the club does not have firm plans for the next step in his recovery yet, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Mets' Zack Wheeler: Set for a bullpen session

Wheeler (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

There has been plenty of optimism surrounding Wheeler's return, with DiComo also going on to say that the Mets may activate him early next week. The right-hander could be a major chip at the trade deadline if he can prove his health. Wheeler has managed a 4.69 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 119 innings while striking out 130 batters.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Braves' Kevin Gausman: Activated ahead of Sunday's start

Gausman (foot) was activated from the injured list ahead of Sunday's start against the Nationals.

Things didn't go well for Gausman prior to his injury, and he will now get a chance to turn his season around in advance of the trade deadline. He logged a 6.21 ERA and 4.61 xFIP in 13 starts, striking out 64 in 62.1 innings. If he does not show some signs of turning things around, it's possible that the Braves could trade for someone to replace him in the rotation.
