  • Nick Yorke 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Yorke: Three hits in loss

Yorke went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Yorke went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in his major-league debut Monday. It didn't take him long to check off another first, as he had three singles in his second career game. The contact-oriented infielder should continue to get steady playing time down the stretch as the Pirates evaluate his major-league readiness for 2025. Yorke has started both of his big-league contests at second base, which could lead to Nick Gonzales being forced to share shortstop with Isiah Kiner-Falefa to finish the year.

  • Luis Garcia 2B | WAS

Nationals' Luis Garcia: Removed as precaution

Garcia was removed from Tuesday's game against the Mets due to right wrist discomfort, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Garcia's wrist began bothering him after he struck out swinging in the third inning, though he was able to stay in on defense for another frame before Ildemaro Vargas replaced him in the fourth. Manager Dave Martinez noted that Garcia's removal was a precautionary move, so it's possible the 24-year-old returns to the starting nine for Wednesday's series finale.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Receiving Tuesday off

Marte is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies.

Marte started the previous six games and will receive a maintenance day after going 6-for-22 with a double and two homers during that stretch. Luis Guillorme is receiving a start at second base while batting eighth.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Back in big leagues

The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

The 25-year-old spent the past couple weeks in the minors but will rejoin the big club Tuesday as Matt Chapman heads to the paternity list. Schmitt has a .206/.255/.324 slash line in 277 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Vidal Brujan 2B | NYM

Marlins' Vidal Brujan: Resumes baseball activities

Brujan (shoulder) resumed taking part in baseball activities last weekend, MLB.com reports.

Brujan landed on the injured list Aug. 31 with a right shoulder AC joint sprain, an injury that manager Skip Schumaker said had been bothering the 26-year-old for much of the season. Though Brujan is showing daily improvement, it's not clear whether he'll have enough time to fully heal from the injury before the Marlins' season ends Sept. 29.

  • Phillies' Buddy Kennedy: Sent to minors

The Phillies optioned Kennedy to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

The 25-year-old was called up by Philadelphia on Sept. 6 but will return to Triple-A with Edmundo Sosa (back) being activated from the injured list Tuesday. Kennedy appeared in seven games during his brief time in the majors and went 2-for-10 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run scored.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Blasts 32nd home run

Marte went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and three strikeouts in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies.

Marte got the scoring started Monday when he took Antonio Senzatela deep in the first inning. The 32 home runs have tied Marte's career high he set during the 2019 season. The 30-year-old seems to be finding his power stroke again since returning from an ankle injury, as he now has two homers and six RBI over his last five games. Overall, Marte is slashing .292/.366/.553 with 87 RBI in 124 games this season.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Reaches three times in win

Hoerner went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in Monday's 9-2 win over the Athletics.

Hoerner chipped in two of Chicago's 18 hits and recorded the team's only walk in the easy win. The infielder is batting .327 this month, which has pushed his season average up to .264. Hoerner is mostly a contact hitter, but he's at his best once he's on the basepaths, as he leads the Cubs with 29 stolen bases in 34 attempts.

  • Nick Gonzales 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Exiting lineup Monday

Gonzales is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.

Gonzales will head to the bench as the Pirates make room in the lineup at second base for prospect Nick Yorke, who was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis. Though the Pirates will likely give Yorke a look in a near-everyday role over the final two weeks of the season, he has experience at shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots, so he won't necessarily bump Gonzales out of the everyday lineup. Gonzales had started in all but two of the Pirates' previous 19 games following his return from the injured list Aug. 26, slashing .300/.347/.343 during that stretch.

  • Nick Yorke 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Yorke: Call-up official, will start Monday

The Pirates selected Yorke's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Monday's game against the Cardinals. He'll start at second base and bat seventh in the series opener.

Pittsburgh optioned infielder Alika Williams to Triple-A to clear a spot on the active roster for Yorke, who could be in store for a near-everyday role while getting his first taste of the big leagues over the final two weeks of the season. After being acquired from the Red Sox at the trade deadline, Yorke slashed .359/.438/.516 with two home runs and eight stolen bases in 176 plate appearances at Indianapolis to earn his way to the majors. Yorke has spent most of his minor-league career at second base, but he also picked up starts at shortstop and third base along with all three outfield spots this season and could end up filling a super-utility role for the Pirates.
