  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Won't return before weekend

Martinez (groin) is not expected to return before the weekend, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Martinez left Tuesday's game early due to groin tightness. His absence Wednesday against the Giants is considered precautionary, but there's little reason for the Red Sox not to proceed with caution in what has seemingly become a lost season.

  • Mariners' Daniel Vogelbach: Sits again Wednesday

Vogelbach remains on the bench Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

The lack of a designated hitter under National League rules doesn't guarantee a day off for Vogelbach, as he's started 46 times at first base this season. However, Austin Nola will man the position Wednesday.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Won't play full game

Stanton will be limited to a couple at-bats and won't play more than four or five innings Wednesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

It makes sense for the Yankees to ease Stanton back in his first game since late June. While Stanton won't be on the bench for his first game as previously expected, the effect will be essentially the same, as he'll play half a game before being cleared to play a full one. That could come as soon as Thursday, when he could spend the entire contest as the designated hitter.

  • Franmil Reyes DH | WAS

    Indians' Franmil Reyes: Remains absent

Reyes (personal) remains out of the lineup Wednesday against the Tigers.

Reyes will be with the team Wednesday but won't play, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. He could be back in the lineup as soon as Thursday. Carlos Santana will be the designated hitter Wednesday, with Jake Bauers starting at first base.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Sits as expected

Martinez (groin) is on the bench as expected Wednesday against the Giants, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Martinez left Tuesday's game early due to groin tightness and was expected to miss at least one more game. The Red Sox have been effectively eliminated from playoff contention, so there's little reason to rush the star slugger back. Christian Vazquez will be the designated hitter in his absence, with Sandy Leon starting behind the plate.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Returns from long absence

Stanton (knee) was activated from the 60-day injured list and is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels, batting seventh and playing left field, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

A variety of injuries has limited Stanton to just nine games this season, but he'll have up to 10 contests to get up to speed by the start of the playoffs. Manager Aaron Boone said previously that Stanton wasn't expected to start right away, but there's evidently been a change of plans. It's possible Stanton won't play entire games right away in an effort to ease him back into action, James Wagner of The New York Times reports.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Slated to sit out Wednesday

Manager Alex Cora said after Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Giants that Martinez (groin) is unlikely to play Wednesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Martinez exited the 15-inning loss in the bottom of the sixth after experiencing left groin tightness following his second plate appearance of the night. Tuesday's loss leaves the 79-71 Red Sox nine games off the pace for the American League's second wild-card spot, so Boston doesn't have much motivation to rush Martinez back into action. Martinez is being viewed as day-to-day for the time being but could be sent in for an MRI if he fails to show quick improvement.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: Goes deep in loss

Choi went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.

Choi's lone hit in the game was a solo homer to right field in the sixth inning that temporarily knotted the score. The 28-year-old has been given the most major-league playing time in his career this season, seeing action in 119 games and compiling a .259/.365/.441 slash line along with 16 homers and 55 RBI.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Day-to-day with groin tightness

Martinez exited Tuesday's game with left groin tightness and is day-to-day, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.

Martinez went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before suffering the injury. Sam Travis replaced him before suffering his own injury.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Could be activated Wednesday

Stanton (knee) could be activated as soon as Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Stanton should be back with the team no later than Thursday, though he may not play right away. Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that he doesn't expect Stanton to start his first game back, but he's eventually expected to be the team's regular left fielder heading into the playoffs.
