Paul Sewald RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Records one-out save
Sewald retired the only batter he faced to register a save against the Cubs on Thursday.
Arizona led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth frame, so it didn't look like Sewald would be needed. However, the Cubs scored a run on three hits to put the potential tying run in the on-deck circle with two outs, resulting in the closer getting the call. Sewald got Seiya Suzuki to ground out to end the contest and walk away with a save without needing to work up much of a sweat. It was Sewald's third save in September and his 31st overall this season.

Ryan Pepiot RP | TB
Dodgers' Ryan Pepiot: Dominant in Miami
Pepiot (2-0) earned the win Thursday, allowing one hit over seven scoreless innings against Miami. He struck out three without issuing any walks.
The 26-year-old was perfect through 6.2 innings before Josh Bell grounded a single up the middle. Pepiot tallied only three strikeouts for the second consecutive outing, but he was extremely efficient, needing just 84 pitches (60 strikes) to complete seven frames for the first time in his young career. After posting a 6.7 BB/9 in his first stint in the big-leagues last year, Pepiot has issued just two walks in 21 innings this season with a sterling 0.86 ERA and minuscule 0.52 WHIP. The rookie is currently scheduled for a home matchup against the Padres early next week.

Javier Assad RP | CHC
Cubs' Javier Assad: Takes loss Thursday
Assad (3-3) allowed three runs on seven hits across 5.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Diamondbacks. He walked one and didn't have any strikeouts.
Assad pitched OK, but he couldn't match his last two starts, when he went seven innings each time and allowed just one earned run overall. The righty has been pushed into the rotation with Marcus Stroman (hip) out and Drew Smyly getting shifted into the bullpen. Assad has been solid all year with a 2.83 ERA across 92.1 innings, and he'll look to stay sharp in his next start, which is currently penciled in for next week against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Bryce Jarvis RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Bryce Jarvis: Optioned to Triple-A
Arizona optioned Jarvis to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
Jarvis threw 28 pitches over two scoreless innings of relief in Wednesday's series finale against the Rockies and wasn't going to be available for a bit. Ryne Nelson has been called up in a corresponding roster move to start Thursday's series opener versus the Cubs.

Michael Fulmer RP | SF
Cubs' Michael Fulmer: Throws bullpen session
Fulmer (forearm) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
It was his first time throwing off a mound since he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 26 due to a mild right forearm strain. There is not an exact timetable for Fulmer's return to the Cubs' bullpen, but he would seem to be getting close. He may be allowed to skip a minor-league rehab assignment if his side work continues to go smoothly.

Glenn Otto RP | HOU
Padres' Glenn Otto: Claimed by Friars
The Padres claimed Otto off waivers from the Rangers on Thursday.
Otto was DFA'd by Texas on Tuesday after accumulating a 10.13 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through 10.2 innings in the majors. However, he's been solid in Triple-A with a 3.38 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 29.1 frames, so the Padres will take a flier on him as a bullpen depth piece. Ben Gamel was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Michael Mariot RP | CIN
Reds' Michael Mariot: Outrighted to Triple-A
Mariot passed through waivers unclaimed and was outrighted Thursday to Triple-A Louisville, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mariot was pushed off the 40-man roster Tuesday after making his first major-league appearance since 2016 on Monday against the Mariners. The 34-year-old right-hander will remain part of the Reds organization for the time being.

Ryan Pepiot RP | TB
Dodgers' Ryan Pepiot: Recalled ahead of Thursday's start
Pepiot was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
Pepiot is slated to start Thursday's game in Miami. The young right-hander has been terrific in three appearances (one start) for the Dodgers this season, holding a 1.29 ERA and 14:2 K:BB over 14 innings. The Dodgers are in need of rotation help, giving Pepiot the chance to make multiple starts down the stretch if he continues to pitch well.

Alex Wood RP | ATH
Giants' Alex Wood: Struggles in loss
Wood (5-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over 2.1 innings against the Cubs while striking out two.
Wood got off to a rough start, allowing four of the first six batters to reach base in the first inning, which led to three runs coming across for Chicago. He got tagged again in the third for another two runs, marking the third time this season in which he's allowed at least five runs. The lefty had not given up an earned run in five straight appearances coming in, which covered a span of 9.1 innings. Wednesday's start was Wood's first since July 21, and he hasn't covered more than four frames in an outing since July 8, so he doesn't offer much fantasy upside even if he sticks in a starting role.

David Bednar RP | NYY
Pirates' David Bednar: Nails down 33rd save
Bednar picked up the save Wednesday against the Brewers, allowing one hit while striking out two over a scoreless inning. He did not walk a batter.
Bednar gave up a leadoff single to Andruw Monasterio in the top of the ninth but was able to retire the next three batters to nail down his 33rd save of the season. The right-hander has now converted each of his last 10 save opportunities and has not allowed a run through five September appearances. He also has not walked a batter since Aug. 19 against the Twins (spanning eight appearances).
