  • Jorge Polanco 2B | NYM

Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Back in action Saturday

Polanco (knee) will start at second base and bat fifth Saturday against the Phillies.

Polanco was forced to sit out Friday's series opener after exiting Wednesday's game due to a knee injury, but the issue seems to have subsided ahead of Saturday's contest. The 31-year-old infielder has put up a career-worst batting average (.210) and OPS (.644) through 289 plate appearances this season, but he's begun to heat up lately, slashing .273/.340/.682 with five homers and nine RBI since the All-Star break.

  • Zack Gelof 2B | ATH

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Day off Saturday

Gelof is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Dodgers.

Gelof will get a breather after he went 2-for-10 with a walk and four strikeouts while starting the team's last three contests. Darell Hernaiz was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday after nursing a left ankle sprain for over two months and he'll replace Gelof at second base and bat eighth against Los Angeles.

  • Otto Lopez SS | MIA

Marlins' Otto Lopez: Getting Saturday off

Lopez isn't in the Marlins' lineup Saturday against Atlanta.

After going 1-for-4 with a stolen base during Friday's loss, Lopez will give way to Vidal Brujan at second base.

  • Pirates' Isiah Kiner-Falefa: Activated Saturday

The Pirates reinstated Kiner-Falefa (knee) from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

A sprained left knee forced Kiner-Falefa onto the injured list in July, and he was in the final stages of his rehab assignment when he was traded from Toronto to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline. The 29-year-old went 4-for-10 and scored two runs over three games while in the minors, and he figures to take over as the Pirates' primary second baseman now that he's healthy. Alika Williams was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

  • Alika Williams SS | PIT

Pirates' Alika Williams: Optioned to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Williams to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

With Isiah Kiner-Falefa (knee) returning from the injured list, Williams will be pushed back to the minor leagues. He appeared in two games during his brief stint in the majors and was hit by a pitch to drive in a run during his lone plate appearance.

  • Nicky Lopez 3B | ARI

White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Out of lineup again

Lopez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Twins.

Lopez will sit for a second straight game Saturday after starting five straight. Brooks Baldwin will start at shortstop and bat second against Minnesota right-hander Bailey Ober.

  • Ronny Mauricio 2B | NYM

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Undergoes another surgery

Mauricio underwent a cleanup procedure on his right knee Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

The 23-year-old prospect tore his ACL in winter ball and underwent an initial surgery in December, but Mauricio had to go back under the knife this week to remove some scar tissue, ending any chance he might have had of playing in 2024. The Mets expect him to be fully recovered in time for spring training next year. Mauricio made his big-league debut in 2023 after posting a .292/.346/.506 slash line for Triple-A Syracuse in 116 games, and assuming he is healthy next spring, he should be competing for a spot on the big-league roster and potentially even the starting job at second base.

  • Gleyber Torres 2B | DET

Yankees' Gleyber Torres: In lineup Saturday

Torres is starting at second base and batting fifth against the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Torres was pulled early from Friday's loss after failing to run hard out of the batter's box on a second-inning single, but he apologized after the contest and won't be subjected to additional missed time. He's gone 2-for-15 over his past four games following a hot five-game stretch during which he went 8-for-22 with two homers.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Productive in Friday's win

Horwitz went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in Friday's win over the Yankees.

Getting the start at DH and batting fourth, Horwitz poked RBI singles in the third and sixth innings as part of an 8-5 victory. The 26-year-old has seen his production tail off of late -- he sports a .220/.267/.317 slash line over his last 10 games -- but with Joey Loperfido getting a look as the full-time left fielder and Davis Schneider back in the mix at second base as a result, Horwitz could DH more often and not be stretched defensively at the keystone, allowing him to focus on his offensive contributions.

  • Nick Sogard SS | BOS

Red Sox's Nick Sogard: Logs hit, two RBI in debut

Sogard went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 11-6 win over Texas.

Sogard, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, made his MLB debut. He got the start at second base over a slumping David Hamilton, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he plans to use Hamilton against right-handers going forward, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
