  • Evan Longoria 3B | ARI

Giants' Evan Longoria: Likely back early next week

Longoria (hamstring) will likely be able to return at some point during the Giants' series against the Padres that begins Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Longoria has been sidelined with a Grade 1 hamstring strain since late July but will likely be able to rejoin the Giants after spending just over the minimum of 10 days on the IL. The 36-year-old has been fielding grounders and running over the last week, and it's not yet clear whether he'll embark on a brief rehab assignment prior to being activated.

  • Gio Urshela 3B | MIN

Twins' Gio Urshela: Not starting Thursday

Urshela isn't starting Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Urshela started the last three games and went 2-for-12 with a homer, three RBI and a strikeout. Jose Miranda will take over at the hot corner and bat sixth.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Phillies' Jean Segura: Back from injured list

Segura (finger) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list by the Phillies on Thursday. He'll man second base and bat seventh in the Phillies' series opener with the Nationals.

Segura has been sidelined the past two months after undergoing surgery for a fractured right index finger, but he's been cleared to rejoin the active roster after an eight-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 32-year-old should take over the everyday role at second base while Bryson Stott handles primary duties at shortstop. Segura had a .275/.324/.407 slash line with six homers, 19 RBI and eight stolen bases in 44 games prior to suffering the injury. Didi Gregorius was released by the Phillies in a corresponding move.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Pirates' Kevin Newman: Not starting Thursday

Newman isn't starting Thursday against the Brewers.

Newman started the last seven games and hit .367 with a triple, four doubles, three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Tucupita Marcano will take over at second base and lead off Thursday.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Four hits in Wednesday's loss

Vargas went 4-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Mets.

Getting the start at third base and batting ninth, the 31-year-old utility player kept flipping the lineup over, although Vargas' efforts didn't lead to any actual Washington offense until the ninth inning. With Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco both struggling at the plate this season, Vargas could see semi-consistent work around the infield, but the expected promotion of CJ Abrams -- one of the headliners in the package the Nationals received for Juan Soto -- would block one of those paths to playing time and potentially even cost Vargas his roster spot.

  • Alex Bregman 3B | CHC

Astros' Alex Bregman: Knocks in one, scores once

Bregman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Bregman came to the plate with a runner on third base and one out in the first inning and collected his 56th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly. He's hit well in 13 starts since the All-Star break, maintaining a .300 average with two homers, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. For the season, Bregman owns a .777 OPS, identical to his mark in 2021.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Slugs homer among three hits

Machado went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs in Thursday's 9-1 win against the Rockies.

The big news in San Diego on Wednesday was the debut of new acquisition Juan Soto, but Machado gave a loud reminder that the team didn't lack for superstars prior to Soto's arrival. Machado hit a solo shot in the fifth inning and finished with his 29th multi-hit performance of the campaign. Perhaps the addition of Soto and Josh Bell will inspire a resurgence of Machado's bat -- the third baseman had been slashing .191/.278/.426 in 12 second-half games prior to Wednesday.

  • Jason Vosler 3B | SEA

Giants' Jason Vosler: Moves to minors

Vosler was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was called up by San Francisco on Friday and will head back to the minors with trade-acquisition J.D. Davis being added to the active roster. Vosler has appeared in 23 big-league games this year and has a .288/.351/.530 slash line in 74 plate appearances.

  • Jonah Bride 3B | TEX

Athletics' Jonah Bride: Out of Wednesday's lineup

Bride is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Bride started three of the past four games and went 2-for-13 with a walk, a run and four strikeouts. Vimael Machin will take over at the hot corner Wednesday.

  • Ryan McMahon 3B | NYY

Rockies' Ryan McMahon: On bench Wednesday

McMahon isn't starting Wednesday against the Padres.

McMahon is getting a breather after he went 5-for-12 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and three strikeouts over the last three games. Elehuris Montero will take his place at the hot corner and bat ninth.
