Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Winans is an option to join the rotation after Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Boone also mentioned Ryan Yarbrough as a possibility to make starts for the club. Marcus Stroman (knee) has resumed throwing off a mound and could rejoin the rotation later this month, but the Yankees will need someone else to fill the spot for at least a couple turns. Winans has yet to give up an earned run in 14 innings this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, collecting a 24:5 K:BB along the way.

The Mariners designated Castillo for assignment Tuesday.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver claim Leody Taveras. Castillo has posted a 7.71 ERA, 2.71 WHIP and 5:7 K:BB across seven innings (two starts) this season during his time in the majors.

Carrasco made the Yankees' Opening Day rotation as a non-roster invitee, but he went on to post a 5.91 ERA with just 25 strikeouts over 32 innings covering six starts and two relief appearances. There's a good chance Carrasco clears waivers, and if he does, he will have the ability to elect free agency.

Hoglund is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Mariners in Sacramento.

The 25-year-old righty will be awarded a second turn through the rotation following an excellent MLB debut this past Friday, when he limited the Marlins to one earned run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over six innings en route to picking up the win. Oakland will likely have a spot in the rotation available for Hoglund as long as J.T. Ginn (elbow) remains on the injured list.

Miller allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out one without walking a batter in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Monday.

Miller battled a back issue in his previous start, but he didn't appear to be limited Monday, throwing 63 of 94 pitches for strikes. While he found the zone just fine, he wasn't fooling the Athletics' hitters much. This was Miller's shortest start of the season by innings pitched, and it's the third time he's allowed at least four runs. He's at a mediocre 4.15 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 32:19 K:BB over 34.2 innings across seven starts, but this was his first start of the season in which he avoided walking a batter. Miller is projected for a home start versus the Blue Jays this weekend.

Severino allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Monday.

Severino gave up all four runs in the third inning, but the Athletics quickly got him off the hook by tying the game in the fourth. The four walks matched his season high, and it was the first time in five starts Severino had allowed four or more runs. The right-hander has a 3.62 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB over 49.2 innings across eight starts this season. His next start is projected to be at home against one of his former teams, the Yankees, this weekend.

Blanco (2-3) took the loss against Milwaukee on Monday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

Blanco pitched well enough to notch a quality start, but the Astros managed just one run against Brewers starter Tobias Myers and four relievers. Blanco impressed with 14 whiffs and threw 19 of 26 first pitches for strikes but was done in by a rough third inning during which he gave up all three of his runs, two of which came on a Christian Yelich homer. The right-hander has completed at least five innings and yielded three or fewer runs in each of his past five starts, and he's projected to face Cincinnati the next time he takes the mound.

Rodon did not factor in the decision during Monday's loss to the Padres. He allowed three hits and a walk over 6.2 shutout innings while striking out five.

Rodon was dominant Monday; he did not give up an extra-base hit and only one Padre reached scoring position with him on the mound. He was in line for his fifth win of the season before San Diego posted a four-run eighth inning to win 4-3. Rodon has given up two or fewer runs in four straight starts, dropping his season ERA from 5.48 to 2.96 in the process. He also completed at least six frames in each of those four outings. Rodon will look to ride the momentum into his next matchup, which is lined up to be on the road against the Athletics this weekend.

Ragans (2-1) picked up the win Monday against the White Sox, allowing three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out 11.

The Kansas City southpaw showed no ill effects of his recent groin injury, stymying the lowly Chicago lineup in this 94-pitch outing. Ragans generated an impressive 17 whiffs to match his season high in strikeouts with 11. After allowing an unsightly nine runs over seven innings across his two previous starts, Ragans lowered his ERA from 4.40 to 3.79 with this performance. The left-hander is currently slated to make his next start against the Red Sox at home this weekend.

Smith (1-2) took the loss Monday against the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five.

The Chicago right-hander looked solid again in this 91-pitch outing, as he has not conceded more than three runs in any of his six starts. The Kansas City lineup failed to square up Smith, who allowed just one extra-base hit -- a Bobby Witt RBI double in the fifth. Smith continues his sharp rookie campaign, pitching to a 2.41 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 31:15 K:BB across 37.1 innings. The 25-year-old is currently in line to make his next start against the Marlins at home this weekend.
