  • Tyler Mahle SP | ATL

Reds' Tyler Mahle: Throws four innings

Mahle allowed two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four across four innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.

Mahle worked through two innings without issue, but was set back in the third inning when Shogo Akiyama lost a ball in the sun. That allowed Jason Kipnis to start the inning with a triple, and later come around to score. The next frame, Mahle allowed three consecutive singles, accounting for his second earned run. On the the positive side, Mahle allowed only the aforementioned extra-base hit, and also racked up 15 called strikes and 10 swinging strikes on 69 total pitches. Mahle may find himself out of the rotation after this start, if Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) is healthy enough to take his next turn through the rotation at Detroit.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

    Mets' David Peterson: Callup official

The Mets officially selected Peterson's contract from their alternate training site Tuesday in advance of his scheduled start against the Red Sox.

New York designated Ty Bashlor for assignment to clear spots on the 40-man roster and 30-man active roster for the 24-year-old southpaw. Peterson whiffed 24.5 percent of the batters he faced at the Double-A level in 2019 and excelled at generating groundballs, but the latter attribute could contribute to an inflated WHIP in the majors, especially with a shaky Mets defense behind him.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Slated to throw bullpen

Quintana (thumb) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Quintana has been recovering from a laceration on his left thumb that required surgery July 2. He'll throw off the mound Wednesday for the first time since the injury. While the southpaw should require several sessions to build himself back up to full strength, he appears to be on the right track. Barring any setbacks, Quintana could debut around the middle of August.

  • Miles Mikolas RP | WAS

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Set for season-ending surgery

Mikolas will undergo surgery on his right flexor tendon and will miss the remainder of the season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Mikolas' forearm issues date back to the end of last season, though he was able to throw throughout summer camp. Notably, the procedure he'll undergo is not Tommy John surgery, so he won't be forced to miss the entirety of the 2021 campaign as well. He's expected to be ready for the start of next season. Daniel Ponce de Leon will take his place in the rotation and will start Wednesday against the Twins.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Another bullpen on tap

Kershaw (back) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Kershaw has been dealing with back stiffness since just before Opening Day, but his progression suggests that he could be nearing a return. He threw 15 pitches Sunday, and manager Dave Roberts said that if all goes well during his throwing session Tuesday, the southpaw could take the place of Alex Wood (shoulder), who was scheduled to start Friday before he was placed on the 10-day injured list.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Recalled by Cardinals

Woodford was recalled by the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Woodford didn't make the Cardinals' initial 30-man roster, but he'll join the team after Miles Mikolas (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. While manager Mike Shildt hasn't named a replacement for Mikolas' vacated spot in the rotation, Woodford could be a candidate due to his experience as a starter in the minors. The right-hander made 26 starts with Triple-A Memphis last year, posting a 4.15 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 151.2 innings.

  • Miles Mikolas RP | WAS

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Lands on 10-day injured list

Mikolas was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right forearm strain.

Mikolas was dealing with a strained right flexor tendon in his forearm heading into summer camp, and the issue appears to have resurfaced. It's unclear how much time he'll miss as a result of the setback. The right-hander was scheduled to make his 2020 debut Wednesday and a replacement starter hasn't yet been named.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Slated to throw again

Strasburg (hand) is scheduled to throw again Tuesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

Strasburg threw very lightly Monday and felt less tingling in his thumb. He feels much better Tuesday and will throw again. The team will see how he feels Wednesday to determine a better timetable for his return. The right-hander is dealing with nerve irritation in his throwing hand but hasn't been placed on the injured list as he continues to progress in his recovery.

  • Jerad Eickhoff SP | PIT

Padres' Jerad Eickhoff: Part of taxi squad

Eickhoff is part of the Padres' three-man taxi squad on their current road trip, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Eickhoff enjoyed a strong spring, but he was never a serious contender for a spot in the Padres' rotation. The veteran has been a starter throughout most of his big-league career and can thus fill in as a long reliever or spot starter. He won't be able to participate in games unless a member of the current 30-man roster goes down to injury or tests positive for COVID-19.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Out with shoulder inflammation

Wood was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation Tuesday, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Wood generated some offseason hype after reports that a trip to Driveline Baseball had increased his velocity. That hype should have come with the caveat that there was no reason to believe his persistent injury problems would suddenly go away. He made just one poor start this season before landing on the injured list. It's not yet clear when he's expected to return. Josh Sborz will take his place on the active roster, while Dustin May will probably now remain in the rotation even after Clayton Kershaw (back) returns from the injured list.
